Electrical Apprenticeship: The Best Way to Learn Electrical Skills
March 16, 2026Current Condition of Indonesia’s Electricity Industry
Indonesia’s electricity sector continues to grow rapidly due to increasing energy demand, industrial expansion, and urbanization. The government has also set ambitious electrification targets, driving the need for more power generation and infrastructure. However, despite this growth, the industry faces a major challenge: a shortage of skilled workers. While there are many graduates from electrical-related programs, companies still struggle to find job-ready candidates.
This issue has become critical because without a competent workforce, infrastructure development may slow down and operational costs may increase.
Skills Gap in the Electricity Sector (ADB Findings)
According to a report by the Asian Development Bank , the main issue is not the number of workers, but the mismatch between graduate skills and industry needs.
Key findings include:
-
Graduates lack practical experience
-
Education systems are outdated
-
Industry requires multidisciplinary skills
-
Employers prioritize attitude over specific technical skills
This explains why traditional electrical training or electrical course programs are often insufficient.
Why Graduates Are Not Job-Ready
1. Overemphasis on Theory
Most training programs focus heavily on theory rather than real-world application.
2. Lack of Industry Exposure
Students rarely gain hands-on experience in actual industrial environments.
3. Rapid Technological Changes
The industry is evolving toward:
-
Renewable energy
-
Smart grids
-
Digital systems
Training programs often fail to keep up.
4. Lack of Soft Skills
Employers value:
-
Adaptability
-
Willingness to learn
-
Problem-solving
These are highlighted in the ADB study.
Solution: Electrical Apprenticeship
Electrical apprenticeship is the most effective solution to bridge the skills gap.
Unlike traditional electrical courses, apprenticeship:
-
Combines theory and practice
-
Provides real work experience
-
Builds professional mindset
This allows participants to gain hands-on experience while learning.
TSDC Approach to Electrical Training
TSDC (Technical Skill Development Centre) offers a unique learning approach compared to traditional electrical courses. Our program is designed as a 3-year electrical apprenticeship, where participants develop specific skill sets every 6 months. Each cycle consists of 1 month of intensive classroom learning and 5 months of on-the-job training, allowing participants to work directly in real industrial environments. This ensures not only theoretical understanding but also hands-on experience aligned with industry needs. The TSDC Electrotechnology Apprenticeship Program uses an industry-based curriculum developed in collaboration with Holmesglen Victoria TAFE and tailored to the needs of Indonesia’s workforce. Participants attend classrooms and practical workshops at TSDC, where theoretical knowledge is applied through hands-on training and industry-standard installation practices.
The acquired competencies are subsequently applied in the participants’ respective workplaces, with implementation and progress monitored by their supervisors.
This model is highly effective for companies looking to upskill their workforce through practical electrical training programs.
Let’s build a safer and more competent workforce together.
